Circle is a multi-purpose task lamp. It is designed to be positioned in three different ways to accommodate for different lighting conditions. The lamp is controlled by specific gestures (upward and downward movement) using machine learning, giving the freedom of light control without a traditional interface.
We set out to build a light fixture designed to serve for multiple purposes. Its design gives the user the choice of repositioning for different lighting. It is using an Arduino BLE to run a machine learning model trained on time-of-flight sensor data using the Tensorflow Lite library to detect specific gestures. Through these gestures the user can switch a 12V lamp between different states.

The 3D printed circles are divided by laser-cut acrylic, positioned in a way to create a lighting effect that would differ depending on the positioning of the fixture.
There was a series of tryouts with different positioning before the parts where fixed to decide on the desired effect.
A hollowed-out ball of translucent plastic was ideal as a diffuser for the corn bulb which would be placed in the center of the fixture. While not ideal, most of the circular parts were glued together to maintain a clean design free of screws and bolts. A central acrylic piece was laser cut in the dimensions of the bulb diffuser, so that the mechanics of holding the bulb were integrated into the design.
The sides of the fixture were shut with translucent acrylic and paper, providing a diffused glow.
